Reflections on Judging and the importance of the right hat

I would like to begin the new year by looking back at the past one. One of the most memorable experiences for me was being invited to serve as a Fashions on the Field judge at the Bong Bong Race Day in Bowral.

This event is a traditional local countryside picnic race day, where lovers of horse racing naturally meet lovers of fashion. For me, it was not only my first time attending this event, but also my very first experience judging Fashions on the Field – which made the day especially meaningful.

The atmosphere was festive yet relaxed. On this small country racecourse, good food, drinks, a little gambling and the excitement of backing a favourite all came together – whether on the racetrack or on the Fashion on the Field stage. The overall impression was completed by the outfits of the attendees, many of which were a pleasure to admire.

For the day, I wore an outfit by Cable Melbourne, paired with a formal felt hat by Michaett, chosen specifically with the cooler weather and the character of the event in mind. I believe that a successful race day outfit should always balance elegance, practicality and respect for the conditions.

What judging Fashion on the Field is really about

Being a Fashions on the Field judge is about much more than assessing a dress or a hat in isolation. As a milliner, I naturally paid close attention to hats – their shape, materials and proportions. But as a lover of fashion, I focused primarily on the overall look.

Judging considers harmony, colour choices, materials, accessories and, most importantly, whether the outfit feels thoughtful, cohesive and appropriate for both the occasion and the weather.

I must admit I was surprised by how little many of the outfits reflected the conditions. It was cold and at times rainy, yet the majority of looks were distinctly summery. While often beautiful, light and colourful, some outfits were clearly chosen with aesthetics rather than comfort in mind.

I saw many elegant, airy hats that would have been perfect for a summer race day, but were less suited to the unpredictable spring weather of the Southern Highlands.

Why every wardrobe deserves both a summer and a winter hat

This experience reinforced something I often share with my clients: a well-considered wardrobe should include more than one formal hat.

A lightweight straw hat is ideal for warm, sunny race days, while a winter or transitional hat made from luxurious rabbit felt offers not only elegance, but also comfort and protection in cooler, changeable weather.

As one of the Fashions on the Field judges, I happily award a point for effort and confidence. Above all, I am grateful that despite the challenging weather, people came, dressed up and supported this beautiful event – one that celebrates tradition, community and style in a way that feels both authentic and inspiring.
