Face shape guide
From my own personal experience I know very well how finding the perfect hat that suits your face shape, and even enhancing it, is not only crucial, but it can also be a very difficult process. Just like with the perfect pair of jeans, we wish to achieve this effortless look that uplifts our facial features and hides imperfections, if there are any… :)
With this in my mind, I have decided to create a little guide for you that may help you with your hat choice. Whether you are new to hats or not, there are simple rules to follow — what to go for, and what to avoid. If that is not tricky enough, let me just remind you of two key things:
1. Whatever hat you choose, make sure you get the right size. For that, I have already created a little guide to help you find the perfect size.
2. The most beautiful hats are worn with a smile and confidence.
Rectangle face
A rectangle face shape is longer than it is wide, with strong, straight lines.
A great example is Sarah Jessica Parker, who balances her features with medium crown heights and generous brims.
Another classic rectangle face is Gwyneth Paltrow.
For this face shape, proportions are key — extremely low crowns can flatten the look, while very tall crowns add unnecessary length.
Medium-height fedoras and styles with horizontal emphasis work best.
A structured brim helps visually shorten the face and adds balance.
Hat suggestions:
– Aurelia Bow Fedora – medium-crown fedora with a balanced brim
– Beret – a structured beret with a high crown and clean lines
Oval face
An oval face shape is considered the most balanced, making it highly versatile for hat styling.
A great example is Diane Keaton, who effortlessly wears fedoras, boater hats, and classic menswear-inspired shapes.
These styles enhance the natural harmony of an oval face without overwhelming it.
Another celebrity with an oval face is Julia Roberts.
She often suits wide-brim hats, soft crowns, and relaxed silhouettes that frame the face beautifully.
For oval faces, proportions are rarely a limitation. The main focus should be on personal style rather than correcting facial proportions.
Hat suggestions:
– Noir Elegance – a bowler with a wide brim
– Urban Calm – wide-brim fedora with a soft, elegant silhouette
Round face
A round face shape is defined by soft curves and similar width and length.
A great example is Michelle Williams, who balances her features with clean lines and added structure.
Another example is Selena Gomez.
For round faces, hats that create vertical emphasis help visually elongate the face.
Defined shapes work better than soft or overly rounded silhouettes. Very round crowns or floppy hats can exaggerate fullness.
Hat suggestions:
– Fur felt Trilby – a trilby with a low to medium crown
– Bucket hat – a high-crown bucket hat with clean lines
Diamond face
A diamond face shape is defined by prominent cheekbones with a narrower forehead and jawline.
A strong example is Cate Blanchett, whose features are beautifully balanced by structured yet elegant hat styles.
Another example is Megan Gale.
For diamond faces, hats that soften the cheekbones while adding balance at the forehead work best.
Medium crown heights and clean lines help maintain harmony. Excessively narrow or sharp silhouettes can overemphasise the cheekbones.
Hat suggestions:
– Velvet Arbor Hat – medium-crown hat with refined structure
– Trilby fur felt – sculptural hat with balanced proportions
