Meet Michaela, Milliner in Bowral

MICHAETT (pronounced /mɪˈʃet/) is the millinery studio of Michaela, a Czech milliner making hats by hand in Bowral, in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales.

I trained under Hana Hniličková, a highly respected milliner known in both the Czech Republic and the Netherlands, where she ran her own millinery school for many years. When she came home to Prague, I became her student. She taught me everything I know: how felt takes the shape of a block, how sinamay wants to move, and how much a hat depends on one gesture, placed well. Without her, there would be no MICHAETT.

For several years I ran my own studio in Prague, making bespoke hats for women who wanted something truly their own. That is where I learnt the most important part of the craft: to listen. To the material, to the shape, and above all to the woman who will wear it. A hat should belong to her.

A Millinery Studio in Bowral 

Today I work in a studio of pale timber in an old building on Station Street in Bowral, next to the Milk Factory Gallery, with a birch tree at the door. Every hat is shaped by hand and sewn with stitches you will never see.
